Growing up around racing gives you something no one can ever understand unless they have lived it also. It gives you a feeling that you can never fully explain. As a kid you have an undying faith in your team. You wear the a shirts and praise your teams accomplishments no matter how small they may be. You go to every tournament that your parents take you to. You may hand a helmet to someone and say "Good Luck". When they do good you feel like you had a part in it. You are taught to treat couplings with extra special care and to never walk on a metal ladder when it is on the ground. You may make friends with other kids and play racing in the camps. In the days before smart phones and Internet you had no way to keep in touch during those long 9 months between seasons. You look forward to to the next season with a passion that cannot be explained.
Racing is unlike any other sport or organization you may ever belong to in your whole life.
You wear your teams shirt or jacket in school and the other kids look at you like an alien and ask: "What the heck is a Fluke". You try to explain but they don't get it. After a while you give up on explaining but you keep wearing your teams stuff.
You have your summer racing friends and your school friends. sometimes they overlap and sometimes they don't. In even rarer circumstances your school friend may begin to love our peculiar sport and join you in your love for racing. They may even join you when you become of age and walk in the footsteps of those that came before you.
People talk about this sport dying out. People may say that investigative reports or audits are going to hurt our sport.
This will never happen as long as we have the youth who want to hit the hydrant or climb the ladder. If we continue to embrace the youth of our sport we will continue to compete and enjoy this sport we all love.
